The Greater Idaho Movement submits signatures
Boise, ID (CBS2) — Greater Idaho submitted a petition in accordance with Oregon law. If enough signatures are valid it could force a ballot initiative on the May 2023 Wallowa County ballot.
The movement proposes to add fifteen conservative, rural counties to Idaho. Eleven eastern Oregon counties have voted for the ballot measures.
The initiative aims to show legislators that the voters want the border to be moved. Volunteers are asking the Orgon senate to allow a hearing on their bill in January. It would invite Idaho to begin g talks with Oregon about the possibility of moving the border. A 2022 SurveyUSApoll showed that 68% of northwestern Oregon voters think the Oregon Legislature should hold a hearing on the idea.
"Two major statewide ballot measures got 51% of the vote last month. That means eastern Oregon came within one percentage point of vetoing them. Western Oregon would be free of our interference if they stopped holding eastern Oregon captive and let our communities join Idaho" said Matt McCaw, spokesman for the Greater Idaho movement.
