What's it like being Joe Vandal? 'There are very few people who know'
BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — There are fans and then there are super fans.
University of Idaho mascot Joe Vandal is the most super of the super fans.
Joe seems to be at all the games and events in Moscow.
But just who is this Vandal beef cake?
“I've never really been asked this question.”
Mascots do not talk, but maybe they can and choose not to.
Joe agreed to talk to us, so we went to an undisclosed location so he’d feel safe.
“There are very few people who know,” he said.
Along with the interview, Joe let KBOI 2News This Morning anchors Bryan Levin and Kelsey Anderson see what it was like to be him.
After learning how to walk the walk and dance the dance, Kelsey was gassed.
“I don’t know how you do it,” Kelsey said.
Joe had some sound advice for Bryan.
“Swing your arms with a closed fist. Not that wide. You just look weird,” he told him.
While the Vandals sports teams watch film on the opponent, Joe just focuses on himself.
“I don't need to worry about other mascots,” he said. “I have all the confidence I need right here. There’s no sense in worrying about what they are doing. It's all Joe all the time.”
Since Joe is always out in the community, how does he stay so fit?
“It's kept pretty secret.”
